The Friday before his birthday, Gerrard was presented his Football Writers’ Association (FWA) footballer of the year award at a gala dinner in London that was attended by many people. The Liverpool’s talismanic midfielder is noted for the confidence he reposes in the team and his high hopes that Liverpool will flight for trophies in the coming season.

He has become hungry and ambitious more than ever and vows in this memorable time of his profession to contend for Footballer of the Year in the next season.

‘The coaches at Liverpool and England are always driving me on, trying to improve me as a player. I am 29 on Saturday and I still feel I can get better’, he said, as captured by the dailymail.

In the just past season Gerrard scored 24 goals in all, 16 of which came from the Barclays Premier League. Though this was an impressive record for the maestro, he is still ambitious and so hopeful next year is going to be bigger for him trophy wise.

Gerrard has pledged to continue working towards making the Anfield club the best around once more.

Next football season with Gerrard and Liverpool is going to be an exciting one with great expectations: we are winning trophies, contending in the Footballer of the Year, and making the Anfield Football Cub once more the best club we can ever have. These have unfolded at a point in time when Captain Gerrard is presented the last of his awards and on his 29th birthday.

Gerrard’s admiration was in the way his teammates have pursued Manchester. His strong desire was the top rank, but though the Reds could not reach the title, they scored more goals and lost fewer matches than Fergie’s Club. Gerrard believes that the experience gained through their challenges should leave him and his team to be confident they can take the final step to glory next year.

“I’ll have certain regrets when the season ends but I don’t normally like looking back, to be honest,” he said. “This time I’m going to use the experience to drive me on and try to win the title over the next few years. We certainly have the ability, as we’ve shown this year.”

“It’s a hard league to win and it’s taught me that you do need the experience of being in title races to win them. I think because Chelsea and United both have that experience, maybe that’s where we’ve come unstuck.

“Sometimes you just have to go for it and take big risks to win the kind of games that we have drawn. But we’ve learned a lot and I think next year could be our year – I’m really confident about that.”

Gerrard also finds impression and hope in the form of his team and the way they have played.

“If you see our form and the way we have played since he signed the new deal, it has given everyone a big lift and that is what this club is all about – togetherness,” said Gerrard.

The target is set, and all paths are leading to a remarkable Liverpool glory in the next season, as the Fans’ Player of the Year and football writers Player of the Year, Captain Steven Gerrard maintains his position in the strong Liverpool squad to face next season.

Ryan Giggs, in the previous weeks, was handed the title of the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Player of the Year, which did not pass without questions surrounding the decision.

Now though, after fans have given Captain Steven Gerrard popular acclamation, professional football writers, an association which has been in existence since 1948, have also honoured him with the accolade of their FWA’s Player of the Year. This elevates Captain Gerrard as to being the first to win this award in Liverpool after John Barnes in 1990.

This means Captain Gerrard has received two awards in just a couple of weeks. And with the latter award, he could not conceal his pleasure.
He said on Liverpoolfc official website:

“I’m delighted but I’m a little bit surprised.”

“When you look at the quality of the players there are in this league, it’s a great privilege to win this kind of award.”

“It’s made even more special for me because I am following in the footsteps of Liverpool players like John Barnes, Steve Nicol and Kenny Dalglish who were heroes of mine. Then further back players like Ian Callaghan and Terry McDermott who were heroes to my dad and so many other Liverpool fans.

“It’s not just the Manchester United players – when you look at the players the likes of Chelsea and Arsenal and other teams have got, they all have fantastic players throughout their squads now. The quality is getting better and better each year so to win this award is a great achievement for myself,” he said.

Humbled by the experience, he added:

“But I’ve had fantastic help along the way from everyone at this football club. My family and friends come every time I play and everything I achieve in football they are a very big part of that because they are there for me 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

“But the biggest thank yous have to go to the manager, the coaching staff and my team-mates. Individual awards are great but you don’t win them without great help from those people.”
Gerrard is said to receive the honour at a Footballer Writers’ dinner at the end of the month, on May 29, a day before his 29th birthday.

Gerrard against West Ham

Liverpool crushed West Ham by 3 goals to nothing at Upton Park in East London to enrich their hopes of overtaking Manchester United at the top of the table. This sends Liverpool to 111 goals scored in all matches in the 2008/09 football season.

With a nice touch to the right side of the target, Gerrard beat Robert green in post, as he rounded him, and subsequently planted the ball in the net. This followed a perfect delivery from Torres’ boot that set Gerrard forward to offset the offside trap and alarm the Hammers with the first goal of the first half within 76 seconds of the game. Gerrard and Tores have so far started only 12 out of 36 games together this season, one of which worked out wonderfully for them in this game in how they accomplice each other.

Just before the break for the second half, the West Hammers’ Luis Boa suffered a nightmare as he fouled Torres in the box for a welcomed penalty to Liverpool. Gerrard, again, took the shootout but Green stretched to the left post to save the ball. The rebound fell to the right in front of Captain Gerrard which he tapped in to undo the progress of the Hammers in their effort to equalize.

It was a battle for the Hammers to pull one back but not from the last few minutes before James Tomkins final whistle. Green saved a header in the box from Torres’ substitute, Ryan Babel, but the substitute tapped the ball in for the third goal of the match.

Gerrard’s 23 goals puts him in the best of his career at Anfield with two premier league matches remaining. But he has also bagged his 118th Liverpool gool. For many, only a great midfielder, not a striker, can produce such enormous goals.

Gerrard with an award

The PFA Player of The Year awarded to Ryan did not pass without concerns that it suited the versatile captain of Liverpool, Steven Gerrard. The ex Liverpool FC footballer, John Barnes, noted that Ryan Giggs is a significant player for his team, a great player and fine guy in the game but although it be, this season Stephen Gerrard had spectacular performance that put him suitable for the player of the year.

Barnes said:

“In reality Steven has been the best player in the Premier League this season and deserved the award”, as quoted on Liverpool FC’s official website.

Steven Gerrard has been a formidable force behind Liverpool through this season and earned nomination for the PFA best player award. He has scored impressive goals including a hat-trick against Aston Villa and the sense of missing a professional player was felt during the period he had to stay out of play until his recovery from injury.

It is Gerrard’s moment now, as he wins PFA Fans’ Player of The Year award, to take heart and be proud about the many fans that cherish him for his confidence, skill, power, pace and inspiration.

The Chief Executive of the PFA, Gordon Taylor, said on the club’s official website:

“Steven has always been a particular fovourtie of mine and I was delighted when he was nominated by his fellow pros for our Players’ Player of the Year award”.

“He is a top pro and a worthy winner”.

Many things about Gerrard say, ‘there is more to desire and there are greater things to be won’.

Gerrard fights for the ball against Newcastle

He could not sit anymore longer and watch his teammates do it all alone. He was itching to join the squad in their campaign to give Manchester United, the league table toppers, a red hot chase.

That is the spirit that led Skipper Steven Gerrard through a quick recovery back into the game to feature in Liverpool’s match against Newcastle Sunday afternoon in which the Mighty Reds won by 3-0.

With these three points in the bag, Liverpool FC have closed the gap on Manchester United at the top of the Barclays Premier League to only three points.

After missing three matches, Captain Planet Steven Gerrard passed fit for the starting line-up for this match and replaced Lucas Leiva. While the impressive striker, Fernando Torres, was out of the squad, but watched his mates from the Anfield director’s box. Steven Gerrard, as usual, fired dangerous shots on goal, but to the relief of the Magpies, his balls could not to find the net. His searching passes were also manifest in the game and his foot works sent balls upfront to test the rearguard of Newcastle’s players.

Everything worked well for Liverpool when Yossi Benayoun parted away with the first goal which attracted some views from the other side as offside contrary to the official’s opinion. Dirk Kuyt made Liverpool confident with the second goal of the first half. Joey Barton added to Newcastle’s sorrows in the second half as he attracted a straight red card for a harsh tackle on Xabi Alonso.

In the dying three minutes to the end of the match Lucas scored the last goal with a diving header from a well taking free-kick from Aurelio that broke the wings of Alan Shearer’s desperate warriors to put the Mighty Reds at 77 points with three matches left while Manchester have 80 with four matches in hand.

Captain Steven Gerrard is strong against the backdrop of speculations from some football professionals that the PFA title suited him but which went elsewhere and together with his team and Boss Rafa Benitez, they are poised to quickly capitalize on any mistake that the League table toppers will make to claim the title.

Injured Captain Planet on the ground

Despite a battling display in the absence of the captain of the side, the midfield maestro Steven Gerrard, Liverpool could not afford to lose this all-important win to send them back again to the top of the table.

The man who wears the captain’s armband, Steven Gerrard, has been missed in crucial matches against Chelsea and Arsenal due to injury to his groin which he suffered in the first Championship match with Chelsea. The number 8 shirt has had to stay out of similar crucial matches in his career because of an adductor strain in the groin known to be caused by his body’s growing pains. He has been responding to treatment for a while now to get him back in form for the task ahead.

Coach Rafael Benitez’s side still has hope of lifting the English Premiership Cup even though Manchester United is hell bent on proving it is theirs. Liverpool’s next match up on May 3 with Newcastle would be another important win for Captain Steven Gerrard and his squad. The Israeli star, Benayoun, has stood for most of the inspiring role and control over the midfield and feeding dangerous balls into opponents half as is characteristic of Gerrard in this period of his absence.

Rafa Benitez insisted his boys “must be perfect” between now and the end of the season to stand a chance of ending the club’s 19-year wait for a league championship. The good news is that Benitez is confident Gerrard will return to the side for the remaining four games of the campaign, starting with Newcastle’s match at Anfield on the third day of next month, all of which Liverpool must win for some chance to clinch the trophy before Manchester United.
